AI Basics

Seven short answers to the questions people ask most. Tap a question to open it.

What is AI?

AI stands for artificial intelligence. It means computer programs that can do tasks that usually need human thinking, like understanding speech, recognizing pictures, or writing text. It is a tool made by people. It is not a person and it does not have feelings.

What is a chatbot?

A chatbot is a program you can type to (or talk to) as if you were chatting with a person. You ask a question or give a request in everyday language, and it replies in everyday language. ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, and Grok are examples.

Which chatbots are there?

Four well-known ones are ChatGPT (from OpenAI), Gemini (from Google), Copilot (from Microsoft), and Grok (from xAI). They work in much the same way: you type a question and it replies. Free and paid options differ and change over time, so check each official site. Our Everyday Tools page has the official links and steps for getting started with each one.

How does a chatbot know things?

Chatbots are built by training a computer program on a very large amount of written material. From that, the program learns patterns in language and uses them to put together a likely reply. It is not looking things up the way a person would, so it can be wrong.

Can a chatbot be wrong?

Yes. A chatbot can state something false in a confident, friendly voice. It can also get names, dates, and facts mixed up. Always double-check anything important, such as health, money, legal matters, or safety, with an official source or a professional.

What is generative AI?

Generative AI is AI that creates something new when you ask, such as a paragraph of writing, a picture, or a voice. Chatbots are one kind. The same technology is sometimes used by scammers to make fake voices, pictures, and videos.

Do I already use AI?

Probably, yes. Many everyday features use AI, such as voice assistants (Siri, Alexa, Google Assistant), spam filters in email, spell check and word suggestions, and some photo, map, and translation apps.

A simple way to think about it

Think of a chatbot as a very fast, very well-read helper that sometimes guesses. It is great for first drafts, ideas, and plain-English explanations. It is not a good choice for final answers on health, money, or legal matters without checking.
