Using AI to explain a confusing bill or letter
Bills and letters can be full of hard words. A chatbot can explain them in plain language. The trick is to keep your private details out of it, and to check the answer with the real company.
Print-friendly. This page prints on plain paper in large type, with the colors and menus removed.
The button needs your browser to allow it. You can also press Ctrl and P together (on a Mac, Command and P).
Two rules before you begin.
1. Never type private details. That means your full name, address, account numbers, passwords, and your Social Security or Medicare number.
2. Do not pay or call a number because of a chatbot answer. Check first, using the steps below.
What you need
- The letter or bill, on paper or on a screen.
- A chatbot you can open: ChatGPT (opens in a new tab), Gemini (opens in a new tab), Copilot (opens in a new tab), or Grok (opens in a new tab). New to this? Start with your first question to a chatbot.
- A pen, and a phone.
Step by step
- Look at the letter. Is it asking for money right now, asking for gift cards, or telling you to keep it secret? If yes, stop. Read our Scam of the Week and the Stay Safe page first.
- Find the one part that confuses you, such as a single paragraph or a few lines.
- Circle that part with a pen.
- Look inside the circle for private details: names, addresses, account numbers, and ID numbers. Draw a line through each one on a copy, or skip them when you type.
- Open the official website or app of your chatbot.
- Type the confusing part yourself, leaving out the private details. We suggest typing it, instead of uploading a photo, because a photo can show private details you did not notice. Replace a name with a word like [NAME] and a number with [NUMBER].
- On a new line, type the request shown in the box just below this list.
- Press Enter and read the answer slowly.
- Type a follow-up for any word you still do not know, such as: What does “balance forward” mean?
- Ask what to do next. Type the second request shown below.
- Write down the questions it suggests on paper. Keep the paper by the phone.
Request for step 7:
Please explain this in simple words, in three short bullet points. Then tell me what it is asking me to do, if anything.
Request for step 10:
What are three questions I could ask the company to be sure I understand this?
Then check the answer with the real company
The chatbot has not seen your account. It cannot know what you really owe. It can also be wrong. So check, using a way you already trust.
- Find the company's phone number on a card, a past statement, or the back of your bill, or type the company's web address yourself.
- Do not use a phone number or link that only appears in the letter or message you are unsure about, or in a search ad.
- Call, or sign in to your account on the real website.
- Ask your questions from step 11. Write down the name of the person and the date.
- Only pay after you are sure the bill is real, and use a payment method you know and trust.
Words you may see
- Balance
- The amount you owe right now, or the amount in an account.
- Due date
- The day a payment is supposed to arrive.
- Statement
- A list of charges and payments for a set time.
- Notice
- A letter that tells you something, or asks you to do something.
