Your first question to a chatbot: 5 safe practice questions
A chatbot is a program you can type to, and it types back. This guide helps you try one for the first time. Nothing here needs your name, your address, or any private details.
Print-friendly. This page prints on plain paper in large type, with the colors and menus removed.
The button needs your browser to allow it. You can also press Ctrl and P together (on a Mac, Command and P).
Before you start
- Pick one chatbot. You do not need all of them.
- Use the official site, and type the address yourself:
- ChatGPT: chatgpt.com (opens in a new tab)
- Gemini: gemini.google.com (opens in a new tab)
- Copilot: copilot.microsoft.com (opens in a new tab)
- Grok: grok.com (opens in a new tab) (steps are on the Everyday Tools page)
- Some of them may ask you to sign in or make an account. That is your choice. Rules for free use can change, so check the official site.
Safe practice rule: Only type things you would be happy to say out loud in a public place. Never type a password, a bank or card number, or your Social Security or Medicare number.
Send your first question
- Open the official website or app of the chatbot you picked.
- Find the box that invites you to type. It is usually near the bottom or middle of the page.
- Click inside that box.
- Type the first practice question below, word for word.
- Press the Enter key, or tap the send button.
- Wait a few seconds, then read the answer from top to bottom.

Try them one at a time, in any order. Each one is safe because it asks about nothing private.

How do I say ‘good morning’ in Spanish? Show me how to pronounce it.

- Say the answer out loud once. It is just for fun.
One more habit: check what matters
A chatbot can sound sure and still be wrong. For anything about your health, money, or the law, check with an official source or a professional you trust. That includes dates, prices, and phone numbers.
